    A great deal!
Both products work very well especially for the price point. Not having to worry about extension cords is a game changer. The trimmer works very well for cutting down tall grass and weeds. The blower is plenty powerful and really impressive to be honest. I’m considering getting the optional extension tip nozzle for it to focus the air a little more but it works fantastic as is. If you’re going to be doing lots of work or have a large yard, definitely consider getting an extra battery or the higher models that fit two batteries. The battery lasts pretty long but it’s just more convenient and efficient to swap a new one on to continue the work with no delay.

XT287SM1=XRU23Z. Identical trimmer with blower included.
This is the identical trimmer to the XRU23Z, I received my XT287SM1 kit yesterday. For some reason this information is buried deep in the Makita pamphlet, but the model number, XRU23Z is right on the box and the trimmer. The difference in numbers is due only to the fact this is a combo kit with the trimmer and BUO3Z blower. Thanks to all the people that answered my question about the model number, interesting enough not one person had the correct answer!
Works as expected, typical high quality Makita product. Not comparable to a 28cc gas trimmer as the thin line limits the ability to cut thicker growth. But it works excellently with up to 12 inch high grass type weeds. I was able to weedeat for about1/2 hour, using half the indicated charge, on the lower setting with the provided 4 Ah battery. Gorgeous piece of equipment!

This 18v trimmer is only 500rpm slower than the 36v model trimmers. (6500rpm vs 6000rpm)
I purchased this set shortly after purchasing the 21″ self propelled mower with 4 5ah batteries. I contemplated on which string trimmer to buy for a long time. What eventually made me decide on this set was the fact that the significantly more expensive string trimmers that use 2 18v batteries only top out at 500rpm faster than this one. I had assumed that using 2 batteries would mean they would be much more powerful, but after looking at the specs of each string trimmer, the 36v trimmers maxed out at 6500 rpms and this 18v at 6000 rpm. (NOTE: I am not including the 36v power head with exchangeable trimmer attachment in that statistic. As those do provide a substantial boost in spin power, topping out at a blistering 7100 rpms!) That being said, I am more than happy with the power and the run time of the trimmer using one of my 5ah batteries. My only complaint would have to be with the size of the guard on this trimmer. Although having such a small guard makes edging with the trimmer much easier, it also leaves the operator highly vulnerable to a substantial amount of blowback debris. Eye protection is highly, highly recommended!
As for the blower I am satisfied with the power. As with any battery powered blower, the runtime is not fantastic, even with one of the 5ah’s. My only real gripe with the blower occured the last time I was using it to clean off the sidewalk right next to a large steel structure. I’m not sure if I can chalk this up to static electricity or what just yet, but as I had the trigger fully pulled and making a sweeping motion left to right, everytime I would get real close to the building I would receive a quick but very noticable electric shock to the hand. This occured consistently while I was working next to the steel structure. I will update my review after I use the blower again in a different area to confirm whether the structure had anything to do with it. Regardless, although the shocking part may be slightly concerning, it does not affect my opinion on the performance of the blower which remains at 5*.

Makita vs. Black & Decker – A Solid Upgrade for Power and Battery Reliability
The main reason I decided to switch from Black & Decker to Makita was the dismal market for Black & Decker batteries. While their tools are decent for a home user like me, trying to find reliable batteries became a real hassle. With Makita, battery availability—both OEM and third-party options—is much better, which has made a big difference in convenience.
Starting with the weed wacker, there are a few key differences. The biggest drawback for me is that the Makita’s head doesn’t rotate independently of the handle, which makes edging a little awkward compared to my old Black & Decker model that had this feature. That being said, I don’t have a lot of edging to do on my property, so while it’s not as easy as I’m used to, it’s not a deal-breaker.
The line advancement on the Makita works by smacking it against the ground, which I’ve used before in other models. I prefer the automatic line advance on the Black & Decker, but honestly, this isn’t a huge issue—it’s just a bit less convenient.
Where the Makita really shines is in its power and weight. It’s noticeably more powerful and lighter than the Black & Decker, making trimming faster and less tiring.
As for the blower, it absolutely blows the Black & Decker out of the water. It’s far more powerful, and I’ve been able to get my yard work done much faster with it. The performance difference here is really significant.
Overall, while I preferred the Black & Decker for edging, the Makita is a better choice for me. The increased power, lighter weight, and much better battery options make it a clear winner for my needs. I’m glad I made the switch!

    Battery last a long time.
I was pleasantly surprised at how I was able to trim my whole yard then transfer battery to my blower and finish up with enough power in the battery to blow off the patio.
